Government appoints new officers for the GNR and the PSP

Inauguration is scheduled for September 4

Lieutenant General Rui Veloso will be the new General Commander of the National Republican Guard (GNR), while Chief Superintendent José Barros Correia will be the new National Director of the Public Security Police (PSP).

The appointment of the two new heads of the country's main security forces was decided by Prime Minister António Costa, and by the Ministers of Internal Administration and National Defence, José Luís Carneiro and Helena Carreiras, respectively.

«These appointment decisions, made following the hearing of the Secretary General of the Internal Security System, Ambassador Paulo Vizeu Pinheiro, arise due to the fact that the current head of the GNR, Lieutenant General Santos Correia, reached the age limit for passage to the reserve on August 31 and, also, due to the fact that the head of the PSP, chief superintendent Magina da Silva, requested the cessation of functions, which was accepted by the Government», explains the Ministry of Internal Administration in a statement.

At the end of its note, the Government would like to thank Lieutenant General Santos Correia and Chief Superintendent Magina da Silva for "their institutional elevation, professionalism and selfless dedication to the public service mission they carried out".

The inauguration of Lieutenant General Rui Veloso and Chief Superintendent Barros Correia will take place on September 4th.
