Summer holidays in Tavira have Tuna-Barrel Route, Octopus Route and Esparto Trek

All during the month of August

The Municipal Museum of Tavira proposes three activities for the summer holidays in partnership with Lais de Guia Association – Maritime Heritage Cultural Association and ASTA – Arts and Flavors Association de Tavira, ranging from the Tuna-Barrel Route to the Octopus Route.

On the next 6th, at 10:00 am, the Tuna-Barrel Route will take place. The visit takes place at Praia do Barril, in Santa Luzia, where, between 1841 and 1966, there was a tuna fishing trap called “Barril or Três Irmãos”.

The action makes it possible to get to know the former work and leisure spaces – the bosses' house, the fishermen's house, warehouses and the “anchor cemetery”, where the fishermen and their families lived during the six months of the fishing season.

On the 9th of August, at 10:00 am, the Octopus Route will take place. The activity consists of a historical-ethnographic walk through the fishing village of Santa Luzia, the “Capital of the octopus”.

From the fishing port, where boats arrive daily from the sea with octopus, you will visit the village next to the Ria Formosa to appreciate the local fauna, the boats, the different fishing gear, and socialize with the fishermen.

The routes are aimed at children and young people (children from 7 years old), with a maximum number of 15 participants each.

Interested parties should register via email [email protected] and 964 686 729.

On the 16th and 22nd of this month, between 14 pm and 30 pm, the workshop ”Empreita de Esparto” will take place, under the guidance of artisan Bruno Constâncio.

With this natural fiber that comes from a plant that grows in the Algarve and is collected in the summer, baskets, mats and carrycots will be prepared.

The initiative is aimed at children and young people (children and young people between 8 and 14 years old, accompanied by an adult), with a maximum total of six participants. At the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to take their piece of esparto wood as a souvenir.

Interested parties must register (free and mandatory) by filling in the form.
