Albufeira once again honors Beato Vicente

The celebration program lasts four days

Albufeira will pay homage, starting next Wednesday, August 30, to Beato Vicente de Santo António, in the year that marks the 400th anniversary of the departure of the religious, born in Albufeira, to Japan. 

The commemoration program lasts four days: 30th and 31st of August and 1st and 3rd of September.

On the 30th, the Igreja Matriz hosts the first day of the Triduum of Beato Vicente, with the missionary rosary, at 21:30 pm.

On the 1st, at 21 pm, the 30rd day of the Triduum of Beato Vicente de Santo António is celebrated, with a concert by the Philharmonic Band of the Cultural Association of Vila Real de Santo António, at the Igreja Matriz, together with the premiere of the Hymn of Beato Vicente , with lyrics by Padre Semedo de Azevedo.

On the last day of the celebrations, on the 3rd of September, at 17 pm, the Eucharist of the Feast in Honor of Beato Vicente de Sto. António, followed by a procession from the Igreja Matriz.

Vicente was born in 1590 in the castle of Albufeira. His parents sent him to Lisbon where, after showing talent in his ecclesiastical career, he was ordained a priest at the age of 27. In 1623 he went to Japan, where he was forced to change clothes and name, becoming a traveling salesman through the streets of Nagasaki.

He passed through Spain, Mexico and the Philippines and ended up martyred in Japan in 1629. Vicente was beatified in the Catholic Church by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. This historical figure was rehabilitated in the 60s of the 3th century by Father Semedo de Azevedo , which on September 1965, XNUMX held the first parade in honor of this “son” of Albufeira.
