Parish Union of Faro again has the best score in Eco-Freguesias XXI

Parish Council of the Algarve capital ranked first for the 2nd consecutive time

The Parish Union of Faro (UFF) was for the second consecutive time the parish with the best score in the Eco-Parish Awards XXI and received this distinction in a ceremony that took place on Thursday, in Miranda do Corvo.

The Farense municipality won 1st place at national level in this 4th edition of the award, in which 221 parishes from all over the national territory participated, «even improving its index, going from 96,72%, a result obtained two years ago, to 99,41, XNUMX%”, revealed the UFF.

In 2023, this award from ABAE (European Blue Flag Association) was also awarded to the Algarvian Parish Councils of Budens (Vila do Bispo), Quelfes (Olhão) and São Gonçalo (Lagos).

To Bruno Lage, president of the União das Freguesias de Faro, this result «is a point of pride for Faro and for the Farenses and obtaining this excellent result which is the corollary of a set of measures that have been implemented over the last few years to value our parish and increase its quality of life, proves that the environmental policy developed by this municipality in addition to being well structured, it is on the right path».

At the same time, this award «is the result of a strategic vision and a policy of sustainability and environmental responsibility that we have implemented in the procedures and initiatives of the Parish Council».

For the mayor, this is «a recognition that increases the responsibility of this Parish Council in matters of sustainability, showing that the excellent result achieved in 2021 and that I am now reinforced, is not the work of chance, but the result of concrete and objective measures that go far beyond the environment and which should be seen as a commitment to continue along this path, the only one that will ensure the quality of life of citizens, their well-being and a healthy and balanced environment».

Eco-Freguesias XXI is an ABAE project started in 2014, which aims to work with parishes towards the development of eco-communities or sustainable communities. In addition to the Eco-Freguesias, ABAE is the entity responsible for awarding the Blue Flag in Portugal and the Eco XXI, Eco-Schools awards, among others.

Eco-Freguesias XXI fits into all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the 2030 Agenda, presenting itself as a strategy to increase local sustainability, valuing the processes of participatory citizenship and recognizing the parishes with the best quality of life offer to its inhabitants.

It seeks, through the existence of a biennial candidacy, to value pathways, evaluate processes and recognize results that materialize through the attribution of the Eco-Freguesias XXI award.

The next edition will be in 2025.
