Faro approves new regulations for caravanning and motorhomes

Failure to comply with the rules can lead to the application of fines

The Municipal Regulation for Caravanning and Motor Caravanism was approved at a meeting of the Municipal Assembly of Faro, on the 5th of July, and anyone who does not comply is subject to the imposition of fines.

The purpose of the municipality is to discipline the activity and "avoid informal concentrations of these vehicles, which occur a little throughout the municipality".

According to the Chamber of Faro, the lack of compliance with rules brings «some negative effects», such as the use of vehicles without conditions of habitability and environmental sustainability, «which do not guarantee basic hygiene conditions and cause damage» - for example those related to basic sanitation -, that do not present safety conditions, «as is the case of some illegally transformed or degraded vehicles», or even that remain for long periods in the same places, «contributing to the degradation of public equipment, such as taps and bathrooms».

Thus, it is defined that this activity will have designated places for its practice, such as the already existing Parque de Campismo da Praia de Faro. However, the municipality stresses that "other spaces may be licensed", including motorhome service areas (places where vehicles can remain for a maximum of 72 hours, to carry out actions related to their cleaning and maintenance).

The regulation will also serve to establish rules of conduct for motorhome owners (following the provisions of Ordinance No. 1320/2008, of 17 November), as well as for those who oversee the service areas.

For example, it is mandatory to have Internal Regulations in these places, which will be subject to supervision by the administrative and police authorities, including the municipality itself, through its competent services and, consequently, to the imposition of fines, in case of non-compliance.

Caravaners, on the other hand, must "comply with the precepts of hygiene, refrain from any acts likely to disturb others, do not light a fire, except when equipment is used to cook food authorized for that purpose, among other rules".

The municipality considers this instrument «fundamental in the management of the territory and in the framework of the activity, especially considering that this is a practice that represents an important tourism segment and contributes to animating the local economy, blurring the asymmetries and isolation of the interior».
