Creation of collective irrigation in the Central Algarve was under debate

Initiative is open to the public

The “Collective Irrigation in the Central Algarve” was under discussion last Tuesday, July 18, at the Algarve Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAP).

The initiative served to debate «the current status of groundwater bodies in the Algarve region, so important for water supply and security, particularly in the central Algarve», says DRAPAlg.

In this central area, where there is no hydro-agricultural use and all irrigation is individual through boreholes, «the feasibility of creating a collective irrigation system was discussed for better management efficiency and adaptability, particularly in times of lower water availability in the aquifers».

In the session, open to the general public, in addition to DRAP Algarve, farmers, technicians and association leaders, representatives of irrigation associations in the Algarve, the Portuguese Environment Agency – Algarve and universities (ISEG and UAlg) were also present.
