Costa wants 70% of the adult population to have completed secondary education by 2030

Investment in adult education implies a “gigantic” effort from the point of view of people and companies

Prime Minister António Costa defended today the continuity of investment in the qualification of the Portuguese, assuming the target of, by 2030, 70% of the adult population to have, at least, complete secondary education.

This objective was conveyed by António Costa in the closing speech of the morning session of the North Strategy 2030 Seminar, at Europarque, which is taking place in Santa Maria da Feira, in the district of Aveiro.

The head of government referred that the investment in the qualification of the Portuguese was the “biggest structural change” that the country has had in the last 20 years, stating that this effort “has to be continued and cannot focus only on the new generations”, where the country is already “above the European average in higher education attendance”.

“We cannot leave anyone behind”, said Costa, underlining that the investment that has to be made in adult education and training “is of the utmost importance”.

The Prime Minister also referred that investment in adult education implies a “gigantic” effort from the point of view of people and companies, because “a large part of this population is the active population”.

Costa also recalled that, in 2004, when the European Union was last enlarged, only 25% of the Portuguese population had secondary education, while in the new accession countries, 75% of the population already had at least secondary education. .

In his speech, Costa also said that there is a contractual target for around 200 workers to be involved in 'upskilling' and 'reskilling' actions, taking into account that there is a set of activities that exist today and that will necessarily be discontinued, in this digital and energy transition process.
