Luís Barbosa, a 12th grade student at Escola Secundária Júlio Dantas, in Lagos, is one of four young people selected, nationally, to represent Portugal in the International Computer Olympiads, which will take place in Hungary, from 28 August to 4 September .
Luís Barbosa is joined by Tiago Sousa (12th year at São João do Estoril Secondary School), Laura Muliar (11th year at the Ponte de Lima School Group) and Tomás Faria (10th year at Colégio Moderno, in Lisbon).
The four students were selected on the 30th of June, in the test that took place at the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, the Selection Test of the National Computer Olympiads (ONI 2023).
The eight students from the ONI 2023 National Final were challenged to solve four problems. After the test, these four students were selected.
This is Tomás Faria's third participation and Tiago Sousa's second participation in the International Informatics Olympics, while Laura Muliar and Luís Barbosa represent the country for the first time. Accompanying them will be Professor Pedro Ribeiro (Team Leader), and Henrique Navas (Deputy Leader), former competitor of the International Informatics Olympiads.
On the weekend of the 8th and 9th of July there was also remote participation in the CIIC (Ibero-American Computing Contest), which this year received a new “brand”: OII (Ibero-American Computing Olympics).
In this Ibero-American phase, in which more than 100 competitors from 14 countries participated, Portugal won three medals. The medals were won by Luís Barbosa, Laura Muliar and Diego Ferreira.
Afonso Sancho, Vasco Carmo and Pedro Peixoto also participated (students Tiago Sousa and Tomás Faria were unable to participate because they were in Japan, representing Portugal in the International Mathematical Olympiads).
This initiative is sponsored by the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministry and is sponsored by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, NTT Data, Ciência Viva and the Foundation for Science and Technology, with the support of FCA – Editora de Informática and Porto Editora.
