Albufeira honors the Lusitano horse with Equestrian Gala

Horses, riders, artists, musicians and participating dancers are all from the Algarve region

Experts in equestrian art say that the Lusitano horse is the oldest saddle horse in the world. Authentically Portuguese, the Lusitano horse has established a relationship with humans for about five thousand years, with its ancestors being common to the Sorraia and Arabian breeds.

Albufeira intends to honor this “partner” of the Portuguese, as well as to praise the relationship that is established, in an elegant and artistic way, between human beings and animals. For this purpose, the Municipality will carry out, in the Marina of Albufeira, the first edition of the Gala Equestre Algarve 2023.

The initiative comprises five equestrian shows and starts next Thursday, July 27th, at 21:30. The following performances are scheduled for the 10th and 24th of August and the 7th and 21st of September.

José Carlos Rolo, mayor, underlines that “this is an initiative that promotes equestrian culture, functioning, likewise, as a promoter of Albufeira as a tourist destination that offers diversified activities and thinking of all audiences, at a time of year when the municipality is full of tourists from all over the world”.

In each of the five shows, there will be the presentation of classical riding exercises, choreographies performed by high-school riders and horses exclusively from the Algarve, accompanied by music, as if it were a ballet.

The knights wear full dress and Portuguese saddles.

Likewise, the participating artists, musicians and dancers are all from the Algarve region.

Admission to the five sessions of the Gala Equestre Algarve Albufeira 2023 is free.
