“Open Air Film Festival” returns to Tavira

Sessions always start at 21:30

From the 13th to the 23rd of July and the 3rd to the 13th of August, the Cineclube de Tavira organizes another “Open Air Film Festival”, in the Cloisters of the Convento do Carmo. In total, 22 films will be shown. Sessions always start at 21:30 pm.

The feature film “As Beasts”, by Madrid filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen, is the film that opens the 23rd edition of the event, on the 13th.

This psychological thriller toured several film festivals, including Cannes, Tokyo and Chicago. It was also nominated for 17 categories at the Goya Awards, in Spain, having won in nine and deserved the César for best foreign film, in France.

«This year, as usual, we have a program that we are very proud of. We will present great films, all highly awarded. And, for the first time in 23 years, there are more films made by women than men. I didn't think about that when I was making the selection, but when I looked at the final program and saw so many directors, I found that fact surprising and indicative of some changes», comments Candela Varas, Mostra's programmer.

On the 4th of August, the public will be able to count on the presence of Claúdia Varejão, who travels to Tavira to share her experience and talk about her feature film 'Lobo e Cão', to be presented that same night. The film by the Portuguese director was critically acclaimed and received several international awards.

The day before, the session is also worth mentioning. There will be an expanded cinema, with the projection of a special version of the film “Os Verdes Anos”.

Artists Joana Bagulho (harpsichordist), Bruno Humberto and Candela Varas (text and performance) prepared new texts and music for Paulo Rocha's iconic film, considered one of the founding films of the Novo Cinema Português movement.

Another feature of the program is the inclusion of two documentaries, one on the life of Cesária Évora and the other on Ennio Morricone. The program also includes the animated film 'Nayola', about the civil war in Angola, which will be presented live and in color by the rapper Meduza, who gives voice to one of the central characters in the work by José Miguel Ribeiro.

The public can also count on the screening of three short films and a premiere, as the film '20.000 Species of Bees' is shown on the screen set up in the Cloisters of the Convento do Carmo, precisely on the date it premieres in Portugal (20 July)."

«Celebrating more than two decades of existence, the 'Open Air Film Show' is an authentic film festival, which attracts residents and national and foreign tourists. Every summer, around three thousand people watch the films and enjoy the activities prepared by the Cineclube de Tavira», says the organization.

«There are those who call us to ask about the dates of the Mostra, to book their holidays in the Algarve for that time. People like to leave the beach at the end of the day and go directly to the Cloisters of the Convent. They eat some traditional snacks at the little bar that we have running during the event, watch movies with family and friends and even chat after the sessions. It's a fantastic environment», says Candela Varas.

Tickets for each session cost 5,50 euros for the general public and 3 euros for students and members of the Cineclube. Those who wish can also purchase a voucher for five sessions for €22,50 or for eleven sessions for €50, thus enjoying a discount. For students and members, vouchers cost €12 (five sessions) and €27 (eleven sessions).

To carry out the initiative, the Cineclube de Tavira has the support of the Municipality of Tavira, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and several private companies.
