The Dusk Contemporary Art Festival, held in ancient stone sites on the Iberian Peninsula and the only international night art event, began this Sunday at Herdade do Freixo-do-Meio (Montemor-o-Novo), but continues on June 21, at Algarve, in Lagoa da Nave do Barão.
This first edition of Dusk is taking place in the unique geological environment of Portugal, with visual artists from (Portugal and Spain), Alba (Scotland), Ísland (Iceland) and Naija (Nigeria). They present themselves, according to the organization, «as a bunch of merry solstice pranksters through the interior of the regions of Alentejo and Algarve, in Portugal».
From the night of the 18th of June until the summer solstice, on the 21st of June, the Festival will present a program with a unique curatorship, by Nuno Sacramento and Inês Valle, where contemporary art will be articulated with archaeological, geological, astronomical and local community knowledge. .
At the Dusk Art Festival, artists from different generations and from different geopolitical contexts will participate, but all from cultures with close connections to stones and geology. Motivated by these, they will present performances, film screenings, debates, night walks, and projects over the course of two nights, in the heart of the Alentejo and Algarve countryside.
Dusk presents works by more than 30 Portuguese, Icelandic, Scottish and Nigerian artists, both in its programming and in the publication that is distributed free of charge on festival nights.
Among the artists, stand out Ademola Onibonokuta (NG), Eddie Summerton (SCO), Jessica Ram (SCO), Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir (IS), Asìkò (NG), AnaMary Bilbao (PT), Cristina Ataíde (PT), Fernando J Ribeiro (PT), Luís Palma (PT), Tiago Duarte (PT), Pauliana Valente Pimentel (PT), Rui Martins & Isaque Andrade (PT) and Egill Sæbjörnsson (IS) and Pedro G. Romero (SP) who represented the Iceland and Catalonia at the Venice Biennale, among many others.
To make the event accessible to everyone, and «to wink the eyes of the elite of art representatives», admission is free.
Lagoa da Nave do Barão is a karst formation of the poldje type located about 9 kilometers from Loulé, close to the village with the same name, where there is an old fountain sheltered between two hills, a kind of community monument to water. All the more so since the village only had access to piped water after the 25th of April 1974.
