On the 20th of May, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel inaugurated the new Municipal Basketball Field.
The sports equipment, now made available to the community, was the winning proposal of the 2021 participatory budget, authored by the young São Paulo native David Rodrigues.
In addition to reinforcing the Municipal Sports Park, this is the first Hoopers Portugal basketball court in the Algarve, designed by the artist @vaidarpintanga, through Hoopers Portugal, a platform for basketball players and fans, which creates, streamlines and promotes basketball courts .
Right on the opening day, the field received its first competition with a Basketball Tournament promoted by the Associação de Estudantes da Escola Secundária José Belchior Viegas, followed, in the afternoon, by the Hoopers Street Tour Stage and by the Basketball Present Vs. Futuro, which brought together the last federated athletes who played in the municipality and the young athletes who practice the modality.
In total, more than 40 basketball games were played on this opening day.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by the mayor Vitor Guerreiro, the vice-president Marlene Guerreiro and the councilor David Gonçalves, the Regional Director of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), the representative of Hoopers Portugal, André Costa and by the author of the winning proposal for the 2021 Participatory Budget David Rodrigues.
Without hiding her enthusiasm with the opening of this public space to promote sports in the municipality, Marlene Guerreiro took the opportunity to praise the civic example of David Rodrigues for his participation and involvement in this project.
Vitor Guerreiro also highlights that the project «has the gift of associating art with culture and sport in a single space and recalls that the field has an urban art mural that pays homage to João Rosa Beatriz, an irreverent young man in his time and founder of the county.
Custódio Moreno also did not hide his satisfaction at attending what in his opinion was not just about sport, but a party. Pointing out the strong sports dynamics, the quality and diversity of sports equipment in the municipality, the regional director of the IPDJ even said: “In São Brás de Alportel, those who do not practice sports do so because they do not want to!”.
The work is carried out under the Plan for the Rehabilitation of Sports Facilities (PRID), in a partnership between the Municipality and the CCD – Culture and Sports Center for Workers of the City Council and Parish Council of São Brás de Alportel and involved a total investment of 80.116,35 euros, of which 60.116,35 euros were invested by the Municipality, with a support of 20 thousand euros by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and in the scope of the candidacy for this programme.
Thrilled to see his proposal implemented and already being promoted, David Rodrigues left words of encouragement for the active participation of young people and confessed his desire for São Brás de Alportel to have teams in this modality again.
In a note, the municipality of São Brás de Alportel reinforces that the Participatory Budget, created in 2006, aims to involve the community in the life and future of the municipality.
For 2023, people from São Paulo elected the proposal for the installation of 21 interactive panels in the 1st cycle schools of São Brás de Alportel, which is in the process of being implemented to start operating at the beginning of the new school year.
