Today is the longest day of the year… because summer begins

For today, the IPMA predicts cloudy skies, showers and even thunderstorms, especially in the Center and South. But tomorrow everything changes

Summer arrives this Wednesday, the 21st, at 15:57 pm, the time of the solstice. This is the day when the Sun will be above the horizon for the longest time and, on its passage to the South, at noon, it will be the highest in the sky of the whole year.

But although this is the day when our hemisphere receives the most energy from the Sun, it is not the hottest day of the year, as temperatures continue to rise for a few weeks, due to the Earth's thermal inertia.

The summer of 2023 will end on the 23rd of September, when the autumnal equinox will take place.

For this first summer day, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmesphere (IPMA) forecasts very cloudy skies, showers until late morning and temperatures ranging between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius. In the afternoon there will be fewer clouds.

But everything will change from tomorrow. From Thursday, forecasts point to hot and dry weather, due to the action of an “anticyclonic ridge between the Bay of Biscay and the Madeira archipelago, which will give rise to a circulation that will bring an air mass with origin in North Africa.

A general rise in temperature values is expected, in particular the maximum, with values above 30 degrees expected in most of the territory, with the exception of some places on the western coastal strip, and values between 35 and 40 degrees inland, in especially in the South region, where 40 degrees must be exceeded.

The minimum temperature will also increase, with tropical nights forecast (minimums above 20 degrees) in several places in the center and south, with emphasis on the Sotavento Algarvio region where the minimums may even be close to 25 degrees.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has already issued yellow warnings for Friday, in the southern districts, due to the heat.
