Chamber honors GDR from Olhos de Água, Albufeira Futsal and Padernense

“These tributes are always salutary, the athletes are happy and feel valued”, said the president of Padernense

The teams, technical staff and members of the management of the GDR of Olhos de Água, Albufeira Futsal Clube and Padernense Clube were honored for their good sports results, in a ceremony promoted by the Albufeira City Council.

The teams were received last Wednesday at the Main Hall of the Town Hall, by the mayor José Carlos Rolo, accompanied by vice-president Cristiano Cabrita and councilor Ricardo Clemente.

In the sporting season that ended (2022-2023), the GDR of Olhos de Água was crowned Coastal Fishing World Champion, Albufeira Futsal Clube won the title of Algarve Futsal Cup Champion – Men's Senior Team and Padernense Club won three titles: District Champion of the 2nd Football Division – Men's Senior Team; Individual National Champion in the 1st and 2nd echelon Challenge Table Tennis and, also, Individual District Table Tennis Champion – Men's Senior Team.

The mayor said it was “a huge honor to have in a relatively small municipality several clubs and different sports, as well as individual athletes, who have achieved important results at regional, national and international level, which is to be praised, fills us of pride and strengthens the will of the Municipality to continue to support them financially and from a logistical point of view”.

José Carlos Rolo recalled that about two years ago the municipality prepared a candidacy for Albufeira to be distinguished as European Capital of Sport in 2026 and that “all these titles are an added value that makes our candidacy stronger and increases the probability of winning.”

He congratulated all the athletes, technical staff and managers for the results achieved and wished that the next sporting season will be productive and full of success.

“This is a unique moment in your lives and in ours as a Municipality; because it is not every day that we can congratulate world or even regional champions and I hope that, for next year, there will be even more clubs to become champions”.

Albufeira has already proven to be good at hosting major sporting events worldwide, but it is also important to allow our clubs to travel abroad on behalf of the municipality, he underlined, so “we have to consider the allocation of funds for travel, being necessary approving a Regulation for this purpose”, he announced.

Sandro Guerreiro, chairman of the GDR Management Committee of Olhos de Água, Carlos Gabriel, chairman of Futsal Clube and Luís Neves, chairman of Padernense Clube, thanked “the fair tribute” and the financial and logistical support of Albufeira City Council and reaffirmed the will and commitment to continue working with a view to winning Cups and Trophies on behalf of the municipality of Albufeira.

“These tributes are always salutary, the athletes are happy and feel valued”, said the president of Padernense, certainly voicing what everyone was thinking in the room.
