Paula Teixeira, director of the Júdice Fialho de Portimão School Group, dies

Portimão City Council will give its name to a garden and car park that is being built next to the Júdice Fialho School

Teacher Paula Teixeira, aged 61, director of the Júdice Fialho School Group, died this Thursday, May 4, in the palliative care unit of the hospital in Portimão, where she was hospitalized, a victim of cancer.

Paula Teixeira, who for about three decades had been linked to education in the municipality of Portimão, had been director of that Grouping since 2013.

Teachers, colleagues and friends recall their commitment to providing better conditions to the schools in the Grouping, namely through the creation of a ramp to facilitate access for students or teachers with disabilities.

It was also a pioneer in involving the school in issues related to civil protection, as Júdice Fialho was the first school in the Algarve to regularly host earthquake simulation exercises.

This educational establishment, by the way, is an official point of support for emergency situations and civil protection, namely in case of fire.

Teacher Paula Teixeira was also closely linked to social problems, having, for example, promoted a campaign in the schools of the cluster to collect clothes to support refugees.

According to the local newspaper Algarve Marafado, the Chamber of Portimão had unanimously approved yesterday to name a garden and car park that is being built next to the Júdice Fialho School.

The proposal justified the decision because the teacher was «unanimously considered by fellow educators and teachers, employees and students, as a citizen worthy of respect and admiration, her professional and civic career being a benchmark of dedication, zeal and professionalism at the service of educational community of this land”.

On its website, the Grouping has already published a note of condolence highlighting the «huge regret and consternation» for the death of the teacher, who «had a life dedicated to teaching and to our students», «a huge heart», being a « example of strength that will remain forever in our memory».

Details of the funeral ceremonies are still unknown.
