Almost 80% of the municipalities identified 67 thousand families living in undignified conditions

By the end of 2023, another 1000 homes should be delivered, says minister

Almost 80% of the municipalities are developing local housing strategies within the scope of the 1st Law programme, after having identified, so far, 67 thousand families living in undignified conditions, the Minister for Housing announced today.

According to minister Marina Gonçalves, there are 242 municipalities (79% of the total of 308 municipalities in the country) that are developing Local Housing Strategies (ELH) within the scope of this program, which aims to find housing solutions for people who live without housing conditions and who do not have the financial capacity to afford a suitable house.

These municipalities have so far identified 66.635 families as living in undignified conditions and which will be covered by this programme, added Marina Gonçalves, during a hearing in parliament, at the Committee on Economy, Public Works, Planning and Housing.

The minister added that 1.400 homes have already been delivered under the 1st Law and another 6.500 are under construction or about to be built.

By the end of 2023, another 1.000 homes should be delivered under this programme, he added.

The measure is part of the legislative package “More Housing”, a Government initiative to respond to the current housing crisis, and which will be submitted to parliament “in the next few days”, according to the minister.

The Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) will finance, until 2026, with 1.200 million euros, the housing solutions for 26 of the identified families, he also said.

The 1st Right is a program created by the Government in 2018, within the scope of the New Generation of Housing Policies, having identified 26 thousand families with housing shortages at the time.
