Casa do Sal presents «A Social Portrait of the Combatant in the Colonial War»

Exhibition is part of the program for the commemorations of the 25th of April in the municipality of Castro Marim

The new exhibition “The Colonial War – A Social Portrait of the Combatant” marks the reopening of Casa do Sal, in Castro Marim, on the 24th of April, at 12:30 pm.

The exhibition is part of the program for the commemorations of the 25th of April in the municipality of Castro Marim.

The Colonial War arises after World War II, in which independence movements broke out in African and Asian territories dominated by European powers. Portugal was opposed to the independence of its colonies and the conflict, which would only end with the 25th of April 1974, weakened the country.

National daily life was marked by the news of its combatants in Africa, visits to their land, their achievements in war or their death in combat, they were generally news in local and regional newspapers.

And Castro Marim was no exception, with this rescue of memories and events that this exhibition is now offering us, between wartime moments and integrative contexts, in which combatants socialized with local populations.

It all depended on where they were placed and the operational activity to which they were subject. The exhibition also includes some pieces collected by overseas combatants, namely João Caldeira and António Vidal.

The exhibition “Colonial War – A Social Portrait of the Combatant” will be open until the 11th of June and can be visited every day, between 09:30 and 13:00 and 14:30 and 18:00.

It was organized by the Municipality of Castro Marim and the Núcleo de Vila Real de Santo António of the Liga dos Combatentes, with the support of the Parish Council of Castro Marim.
