Glocal: Mata de Faro «it was very funny, it ran out of trees, it was plucked»

The Municipality, argues Glocal, transformed a forest, «already small, into a pseudo urban garden»

the glocal movement Faro dispute the work of requalification of Mata do Liceu, inaugurated last Friday, March 24th, which has become «a pseudo urban garden».

«It was a very funny forest, there were no trees, it was plucked».

This is how Glocal summarizes Mata's work, with the movement complaining that citizens were not heard.

This was one of the «rare green spaces that still persisted in Faro, used and enjoyed by countless families with children, young students, athletes, seniors», they argue.

The Municipality, argues Glocal, transformed a forest, «already small, into a pseudo urban garden», having «cut down healthy trees to plant a lawn» and «planted new trees and simultaneously waterproofed the space».

This means that «even more water is spent on irrigation at a time when it is scarce».

«Finally, a forest fell apart, which came to be known as eco-garden, entitled to workout spots, urban furniture and cement trails, various waterproofing, hot pink basketball courts, lawns and bard irrigation, and sprinklers, and more sprinklers», reads, in a note sent to the newsrooms.

In the opinion of Glocal, the population of Faro it is “hungry” for green spaces, shade and playgrounds.

«It may be that the absurd increases in tariffs by Fagar, that were recently imposed on the population, manage to cover part of the expenses that will come from the management and maintenance of this new eco-space», says Glocal.

The movement argues that projects like the Miyawaki forests, which already have an example in Algoz, should be followed.
