Albufeira distinguishes 8 women who stand out for their success and struggle

The initiative began in 2019 and came from the will of José Carlos Rolo

Eight women from Albufeira, who stand out for their success and «the struggle they have shown» in their professions, were honored this Wednesday, March 8, International Women's Day.

Amélia Rita (driving instructor and owner of the oldest driving school in Albufeira), Bianca Nicoleta (surfer participating in national championships), Deolinda Neves (a farmer since her teens and current successful businesswoman), Georgina Ramos (from hospitality to floriculture, stands out for her art in flower arrangements), Gilda Patrício (physiotherapist and businesswoman), Joana Bernardo (film actress), Joy Jung (world-renowned figure in the hospitality and catering industry) and Telma Guerreiro (sports dance, who practices since childhood, having been a teacher in this area for years), are the eight women who were distinguished.

The ceremony took place in the Main Hall of the Town Hall, filled with friends and family. To date, 45 women from Albufeira have been recognized, aged between 18 and 90 years old.

The initiative began in 2019 and came from the will of José Carlos Rolo.

For the mayor, it is "a political act, not partisan, because much has been done with a view to equal rights and duties of women in public life, but much remains to be done".

The mayor recognizes «the fundamental role of women for a balanced development of society» and referred that the criterion of choice is based essentially «on the evident persistence and continuous struggle for the place that belongs to them in the world of sport, health, entrepreneurship and other areas".

Claiming to be «proud in the women of Albufeira», the mayor added that «there are many other women to distinguish, but here we have an account and measure and the number eight, that of harmony, has been the number that has regulated us, even by association to March 8, the date that marks the date of working women for better working conditions and wages».
