Tennis: Four Portuguese go ahead in the Faro Open

Tournament runs until February 26

The Portuguese Jaime Faria, Fábio Coelho, Salvador Monteiro and Afonso Portugal qualified, this Sunday, February 19th, for the second round of qualifying do Faro Open.

The first Portuguese tennis player to move forward was Fábio Coelho.

Ranked 1012th in the ATP ranking, the current absolute national champion easily passed (6-2 and 6-1) Ian Luca Cervantes Tomas, 19 years old and without a world ranking, in a meeting held at Clube de Ténis de Loulé , stage that served as support for the inaugural journey comprising 32 meetings.

The player from Oliveira de Azeméis will discuss his presence in the round of access to the main frame with the Czech Jan Jermar, who beat the Portuguese Manuel Guedes de Almeida by 6-0 and 6-2. At the same venue, Daniel Marincas (6-0 and 6-0 for Maurus Malgiaritta) and Rodrigo Deleu (6-4 and 6-0 for Vivek Kolluru) were also eliminated.

At the Tennis Center of Faro, Jaime Faria (595th ATP) clung to the status of third seed and overcame compatriot and training colleague João Dinis Silva, aged just 15, by 6-1 and 6-1.

The next opponent of the player from the High Performance Center of the Portuguese Tennis Federation will be Sean Hodkin (1264th).

But the highlight of this Sunday's journey was Salvador Monteiro's victorious debut in professional tournaments. At just 15 years old, the youngster from Porto defeated the North American Roman Walewski, five years older, by 7-5 and 6-1 and scheduled a meeting with Sergi Perez Contri (736th ATP and seventh seed).

The quartet of Portuguese winners was completed by Afonso Portugal, who applied the partials of 6-3 and 6-1 to the British Mason Dace. The next opponent of the 23-year-old Portuguese will be the first seed of the qualifying, Maxime Chazal, a Frenchman who occupies the 538th position in the hierarchy, but was ranked 234th.

Monday's day will consist of the 16 matches of the second round of the qualifying (from 10:00 am) and will also announce the results of the draws for the main singles and doubles tables.

The 32nd edition of the USD 25 international men's tournament is organized by Centro de Ténis e Padel de Faro with the support of the City Council of Faro and the Portuguese Tennis Federation and runs until the 26th of February.
