Loulé: Rehabilitation of Solar da Música Nova wins Regional Architecture Prize

Work on the old Atlético building, also in Loulé, was distinguished with an Honorable Mention

The requalification work of the Solar da Música Nova, in Loulé, won the 2nd edition of the Regional Architecture Prize, regional section of the Algarve of the Order of Architects, in the “Rehabilitation” category. The Câmara de Loulé received this award on Friday, in a session in which it was also distinguished with an Honorable Mention for the works on the former building of Atlético Sporting Clube, in the same category.

Designed by the architect Victor Mestre, from the company vmsa architects, the intervention carried out in the Solar da Música Nova – former Solar of the Barros e Aragões family – aimed at «reinstating educational and cultural use in the two-storey building, dating from the XNUMXth century. XVIII, meanwhile acquired by the municipality».

«The property, occupied for years by the “Música Nova” philharmonic band, was in an advanced state of degradation and was the subject of a profound refurbishment», according to the Câmara de Loulé.

This space now comprises three distinct areas: Loulé Music Conservatory – Francisco Rosado and the headquarters of the Philharmonic Band Artists of Minerva and a Municipal Auditorium.

In addition to safeguarding the building and reinforcing identity ties with the city and cultural memory, the Chamber wanted to «improve and reinforce the infrastructure to support the teaching of music».

The works had a cost of 2,5 million euros.

 

 

As for the former Atlético building, the new home of the Casa da Cultura de Loulé, the investment made was 360 thousand euros. Bruno Oliveira, Marlene dos Santos and João Soares, from the company ODS, signed the project that aimed to adapt the second floor of the building to a multipurpose space aimed at activities of a cultural nature, maintaining the characteristics and maximum use of the existing elements, providing it with good conditions of use in terms of structure, health and comfort.

«Through a contemporary approach, reconciling heritage and symbolic values, it was intended to respond to the new functional requirements of a space linked to culture», summarizes the municipality.

The Regional Architecture Prize – Algarve is an initiative instituted by the Algarve regional section of the Order of Architects, which aims to promote and encourage architectural quality, dignify the urban image and enhance and safeguard the Algarve's heritage.

This award is intended to reward architects who have built work in the Algarve, whether public or private, which have stood out for their architectural and constructive quality.

In addition to “Rehabilitation”, awards were also given in the categories of “Single or two-family housing”, “Collective housing”, “Equipment, services and industry” and “Architecture and landscape”.
