Windsurfer wants to go from Fuseta to the world – but needs help

The official presentation of the project by speed windsurfer João Correia took place last Saturday, January 28

The first goal is to win the Algarve Winter Speed Challenge, in the “Sotavento” category, but the dreams of windsurfer João Correia go far beyond that. “I would like to participate in the Spanish Championship and go to Luderitz, in Namibia, where world speed records have been broken”, he says. But for that, the athlete, who lives and trains in Fuseta, needs support.

The official presentation of the project by speed windsurfer João Correia took place last Saturday, January 28th.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the athlete explained that the first big goal is to win the Algarve Winter Speed Challenge, in the “Sotavento” category, which runs until the end of March.

To do so, João Correia has to beat the competition – of the nine best times he achieves, the best is what will count.

With about 40 years of windsurfing, the athlete also recently had an invitation that he decided to accept.

«A friend of mine, who is a speed champion in Spain, challenged me to participate in their championship. Since I got into this tooth and nail and I feel prepared, I accepted the challenge», he told our newspaper.

Added to this is another dream – and that is really the «great goal».

It is a matter of going to Luderitz, in Namibia, the place «where the world speed records have been broken».

«The goal is to try to go there in 2026. This is a medium, long term project. In 2026, I will be 60 years old and I would like to go to Luderitz, beat my personal record and, who knows, Portugal's record», he added.

However, to achieve these objectives (participating in the Spanish championship and going to Namibia), João Correia needs support.

«Without sponsors, or help, it will be impossible. Just to go to the Spanish Championship, all my equipment has to be renewed », he explained.

Anyone who wants to get in touch with the athlete can do so through their Facebook page.

The presentation of this project was attended by Custódio Moreno, Regional Director of the IPDJ, and the vice-president of the Union of Parishes of Fuzeta and Moncarapacho.
