Navy coordinated the saving of 458 lives at sea in 2022

The Navy highlights «the participation of merchant ships» in rescues

The Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers (MRCC Lisboa), Ponta Delgada (MRCC Delgada) and the Funchal Subcentre (MRSC Funchal), of the Portuguese Navy, ended the year 2022 registering the rescue of 516 people, in 458 maritime search and rescue actions, which corresponds to an effectiveness rate of 98,9%.

​The MRCC Lisbon (which covers the entire mainland coast) recorded 291 incidents, with 332 people being saved.

In the area related to the MRCC Delgada, there were 144 cases that resulted in 163 rescues.

In the MRSC Funchal action zone, there were a total of 23 incidents, in which 21 people were saved.

For the success of the actions and the device, «different entities and organizations also contribute through the commitment of means, such as the Portuguese Navy itself, but also the National Maritime Authority, the Portuguese Air Force and other resources and means belonging to the Auxiliary Structure of the National Search and Rescue System», emphasizes the Navy.

It also highlights "the participation of merchant ships, which several times deviate from their commercial routes to provide assistance when necessary and whenever requested by the search and rescue coordination centers".
