Costa: New ministers have «given evidence» and «government experience»

Press conference by António Costa to explain the nominations

The new Ministers of Infrastructure and Housing – João Galamba and Marina Gonçalves, respectively – have “proof of record” and “government experience”, said the Prime Minister this Monday, at a press conference.

«They are two people with government experience, who know the ins and outs of administration, who are not embarrassed by the demands of transparency and the bureaucracy necessary for good public procurement and who give guarantees that there will be no discontinuity in what is being carried out and that there will be stabilization and stability in the execution of policies», said António Costa.

According to the head of government, the two new rulers thus have the conditions to continue the policies followed so far in the areas they will now oversee. For António Costa, the choice of two people who were already in the Government and linked to the PS «is not a sign of exhaustion, but the use of already tested capacities».

After departure of Pedro Nuno Santos, the Prime Minister decided to separate the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, having announced today the names of the two holders of these folders.

Thus, João Galamba, who was Secretary of State for Energy, became Minister of Infrastructure, while Marina Gonçalves, who was Secretary of State for Housing, assumed the new portfolio with the same designation. It has been the visible face of the Government's new policy for this very problematic and deficit sector, namely through the implementation of the 1st Law Programme, which includes the Local Housing Strategies, of which 233 have already been signed with the municipalities.

In his statements, the Prime Minister downplayed the recent changes in the composition of the Government, which began with the resignation of the Secretary of State for the Treasury, after the Minister and Secretary of State for Infrastructure, ensuring that its executives have been able to «face the difficulties» of the seven years he has already been in office.

"I believe that the conditions have been met so that, as has happened in each of the difficult moments of the last seven years, we can live up to the trust that the Portuguese have placed in us and the responsibility that they have invested in us to respond to the inflationary crisis", he said. still António Costa.

This afternoon, the PSD president criticized the prime minister's choices, accusing him of having lost his recruitment capacity, stating that "these promotions are picking up device by device".

Luís Montenegro also demanded the resignation of the «dead weight» who, in his opinion, is Fernando Medina, Minister of Finance.

As for this demand, which is transversal to the opposition, the prime minister devalued it, saying: «when the oppositions are the Government, they rule the Government».
