Video surveillance is already operating in Portimão and Praia da Rocha

The Public Security Police, at the local level, together with the district command, are the only entities that have access to the images.

The 36 cameras of the video surveillance system in the municipality of Portimão are already in operation in the areas that are defined and authorized in this first phase, that is, at the entrances to the municipality and in some streets of Praia da Rocha.

The installation of the network and all the associated infrastructure was completed in October, and the authorities now have, since last week, access to the images in real time, in a city council initiative that aims to deter crime, especially on Avenida Tomás Cabreira, known street of bars Praia da Rocha, sought after by many tourists and residents due to the nightlife.

The cameras are positioned at the entrances to the city: old bridge, hospital roundabout area, intersection of Chão das Donas, Penina and the entrance through Alvor.

They will also have an impact on Praia da Rocha, especially in the area of bars, on the pedestrian path next to the cliff, from the Vau roundabout, then connecting to Avenida Tomás Cabreira, either in front of the nightlife establishments or at the back, next to the up.

The Portimão Chamber emphasizes that this «is one of the first municipalities in the Algarve to implement a video surveillance system with these characteristics and dimension, in a measure that does not intend to replace the police authorities, but to prevent crime and help them, speeding up the response and the intervention if necessary. This is because potential criminals know that they are being filmed and that the images are being viewed by the PSP».

In this case, the Public Security Police, at the local level, together with the district command, are the only entities that have access to the images.

It should be noted that the system has masks configured on the cameras themselves, to prevent the capture of images in sensitive places, such as private homes.

The integral costs assumed by the Municipality of Portimão with the process reached 563 euros, including the installation and maintenance of the video surveillance system, as well as the training of law enforcement officers who will operate with the cameras.

This project was developed within the scope of the Smart Cities of Portimão and enshrines the expansion of the Municipality's own communications network, not only in terms of fiber optics, but also in terms of the creation of electrical infrastructures and the provision of poles for fixing the cameras, in addition to the Wi-Fi antennas, the which will allow the population free access to the internet.
