PSP holds duo responsible for wave of violent robberies in Tavira

The violence of the robberies was such that several of the victims had "to receive hospital treatment"

Two men suspected of "various crimes of theft in homes, and robberies, some on public roads and others in the victims' homes, in a total of 11 occurrences so far", were arrested yesterday by the PSP, in Tavira.

The PSP explains, in a statement, that the two men chose «especially vulnerable victims», namely foreign tourists «on vacation», and, when they left the restaurants, using «high violence», they stole everything they had « exchange value'. The violence of the robberies was such that several of the victims had "to receive hospital treatment".

The Police investigation, which had been underway for months, still managed to "link the detainees to a robbery in a residence, with the use of great violence on the victims", from whom money was stolen.

Following the house searches, several items were recovered, "namely computers, mobile phones, gold wires and rings, watches, bags and caps, as well as a reproduction of a firearm". Some of these articles have already been related to the robberies carried out.

The PSP adds that criminal activity was carried out by the now-detained duo, but sometimes the two men acted "in a larger group", assuming the leadership.

This wave of violent robberies, in the streets and houses, resulted in «a strong feeling of insecurity in the city of Tavira», which «usually» is «quiet and safe», admits the Police.

The PSP adds that "it will develop further investigative efforts in order to identify other suspects who acted in conjunction with the detainees, as well as to relate other criminal occurrences that have been denounced".

The two men will be present today at the judicial authority for the application of the respective coercive measures.
