Future of tuna fishing is under discussion in Faro

Until Monday

The annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the international organization that manages fisheries for tuna and related species, is taking place in Faro until Monday, the 21st, in Faro.

«At this annual meeting, management rules are under discussion on very relevant stocks for Portugal, namely bigeye tuna, bluefin tuna and swordfish», according to the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM), which promotes the event.

The meeting brings together representatives of the 52 Contracting Countries, including the DGRM, as well as the five entities with “cooperative” status: Bolivia, Taipei, Suriname, Costa Rica and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.

ICCAT, explains the DGRM, "is an important Regional Fisheries Organization that regulates the management of tuna and similar species in the Atlantic, throughout the Mediterranean and in the Black Sea".

The opening session, which took place on Monday, featured Maria do Céu Albuquerque, Minister of Agriculture and Food, Teresa Coelho, Secretary of State for Fisheries, and José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve.
