The Diabetes in Motion program will start in Portimão from January next year.
Coordinated by the Directorate-General for Health (D-GS), it is also carried out through a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão, the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve – ACES Algarve II Barlavento and the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve.
This community project is aimed at people with type 2 diabetes and will be coordinated by D-GS through the National Program for the Promotion of Physical Activity and the National Program for Diabetes.
The sessions take place from January onwards, at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão, always on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with dynamism in charge of physical exercise professionals and nurses.
According to the municipality, Diabetes in Motion "represents an articulated effort by the community to provide a concrete and effective solution of physical activity for the segment of the population for which it is intended, with participation being free of charge, upon referral
by doctors and nurses from the Health Center and Hospital of Portimão».
Diabetes, whose World Day is celebrated on the 14th of November, is currently one of the main public health problems in Portugal, where there are around one million people with this chronic disease, with physical activity being one of the pillars of treatment, by improving metabolic control, reduce cardiovascular risk and increase functionality and quality of life.
Those interested in participating in the Diabetes in Motion program should request more information from their doctor or nurse, advises the Municipality of Portimão.
