Castro Marim starts with new Municipal Program to Combat Obesity

At the same time, the municipality works on raising awareness and food re-education in schools

Castro Marim starts with a new Municipal Program to Combat Obesity and develops a base of approach focused on nutrition, psychology and sport.

The program is developed in partnership with ABESFA (Association of Social Welfare of the Parish of Azinhal) and aims to «fight one of the main scourges of this century and restore quality of life to users» by intervening in situations where the person already feels conditioned on their quality of life, seeking to «fill in the slow response of the State, which ends up not 'grasping' the key moment in which people feel the motivation to change».

«We have to understand that obesity is one of the major causes of death in Portugal, strokes, heart attacks and cancer», declares Francisco Amaral, physician and mayor of Castro Marim.

At the same time, the municipality works to raise awareness and re-educate food in schools, students and professionals, also giving priority to short agri-food circuits.
