The Câmara de Lagoa will provide a support of 300 thousand euros to the Fábrica da Igreja Paroquial de Estômbar to help pay for the restoration of the roof and facades of this church, also known as Matriz de Estômbar or Igreja de São Tiago Maior, which is classified as National Monument since 1984.
The fact that this is an asset of «municipal interest» is, moreover, the justification given by the municipality for this investment.
According to the Câmara de Lagoa, this is a work “has long been demanded by the population of Estômbar, since the roof of the church was in very poor condition and jeopardized the safety of people and property of the church itself, such as the carving gilt and the decorative elements existing there».
The poor condition of the temple, the result of «the natural degradation of use and time», led the municipality to commission a study and to carry out a survey of the buildings and movable assets, entitled “Project for structural consolidation, improvement of accessibility, restoration and conservation of architectural elements and artistic assets of the Church of Santiago de Estômbar”, which led to the current intervention in the monument.
«The rehabilitation of the monument required a rigorous study and the presentation of a contract proposal to the entities responsible for the Portuguese Cultural Heritage, namely the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which issued a favorable opinion on the rehabilitation. », recalls the municipality.
The work that was carried out made it possible to «restore the pre-existing chromatic values of the monument's façade. It should be remembered that the last intervention on the façade, registered with the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, took place in 1987 with the repair and painting of doors and whitewashing of the exterior walls».
«Due to its antiquity, eclectic composition and transversal to different periods and artistic and stylistic manifestations, richness and constructive and decorative beauty, the Parish Church of Estômbar has a remarkable religious importance for local and regional communities and a historical and architectural relevance in the panorama national culture», concluded the Chamber.
