Students at the University of Algarve already have a monument in Faro

Inauguration took place this Friday, October 21

Students at the University of Algarve already have a tribute monument in the city of Faro.

The work was inaugurated this Friday, October 21st, and aims to «pay homage to one of the most important and symbolic communities that are part of the community fabric of Faro».

This was the motto that led the Municipality to issue to the University of the Algarve and its Academic Association the challenge of holding a public competition for ideas for the creation of this work.

«It is with great joy that we honor the students who are part of the city while they are here, when they finish their courses and who carry us in our hearts, and those who are part of the city when they stay here», said Rogério Bacalhau, at the opening ceremony.

According to the Mayor of Faro, the «University of the Algarve is the institution that most contributed and will contribute to the development of the region».

«Faro benefited immensely from having the University here, because all the students who came and stayed here have contributed to the affirmation and development of the municipality», he added.

Paulo Águas, rector of UAlg, stressed that the student community, which began to arrive in the Algarve capital in 1983, now has more than 10 people who have contributed to a “very different” city.

«We know that we have an impact on the city and that the city has also made efforts to welcome this great community, but I believe that we have managed to walk in harmony and that we will continue to do so in the sense of having more known, qualifying more young people and being able to be a better society, fairer, more inclusive and more qualified», stressed the rector.

Fábio Zacarias, president of the Academic Association, also thanked the municipality and the University and praised the fact that Faro now have “a visible landmark that represents the student community”.

The winning work of the competition, which can be seen next to the hospital's roundabout, is by the plastic artists Pedro Cabral Santo, Nuno Esteves da Silva and Sérgio Vicente.

The jury was composed by Paulo Santos, vice-president of the Chamber of Faro, Sophie Matias, councilor for Urbanism, Marco Lopes, head of the Museums, Archeology and Heritage division, Luís Barros, director of the Infrastructure and Urbanism department, Saul Neves de Jesus, vice-rector, Fábio Zacarias, president of AAUAlg, Rui Sanches , professor of the Visual Arts course, and Pedro Calado, professor of the Design Course.
