Another 320 kilos of carob were seized on Monday, September 5, in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, in the municipality of Tavira, announced the GNR.
In a traffic inspection action, in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, the Guard military approached a vehicle, having detected that, inside, there were several sacks of carob.
As the driver of the vehicle was unable to justify the origin of the carob, this “led to its apprehension as a precautionary measure”.
The GNR adds that, “with regard to the seized carob, steps will be taken to determine its legitimate owner”. The facts were sent to the Judicial Court of Tavira.
The seizure was carried out by the Criminal Prevention and Community Policing Section of Tavira, with the reinforcement of the Tavira Territorial Post.
The GNR stresses, in a statement, that it has "strengthened policing and inspections in relation to the harvesting and trade of locust beans during the period of the harvesting campaign, with the aim of preventing the occurrence of crimes of theft of locust beans, as well as deterring and repress possible criminal practices in agricultural fields'.
