Faro celebrates City Day with tribute to former mayors and Gouveia e Melo

Formal session starts at 10:15 am at Teatro das Figuras

Faro marks this Wednesday, September 7th, the City Day, with a tribute to four former presidents and the delivery of the City Key to Admiral Gouveia e Melo, Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority.

The official program of commemorations of the Municipality Day begins this Tuesday, September 6th, at 19:30 pm, with the inauguration of the photography exhibition “Voices outside the war”, by Serei Stakhnyk, photographer of Ukrainian origin at live in Faro has been portraying refugee families from Ukraine for 26 years.

The exhibition, organized by ALFA – Associação Livre de Fotógrafos do Algarve, will be on display at Jardim Manuel Bivar for three months.

To finish off the start of the City Day celebrations, Largo da Sé will also host, this Tuesday, from 21 pm, a concert by the fado singer Cuca Roseta.

On Municipality Day, the official commemorations begin at 8:45 am with the traditional Hastear de Bandeiras, next to the Town Hall, followed, at 09:00 am, in the Igreja da Sé, a suffrage mass by the employees and servants of the Municipality of Faro.

From 10:15 am, the formal session will take place at Teatro das Figuras, which will be marked by tributes to employees, as well as personalities and collective entities, with emphasis on four former presidents: José Vitorino, José Apolinário, Macário Correia and Luís Coelho.

They will also be distinguished with the attribution of medals, under the regulation of honorary distinctions of the Municipality, Artur Nunes da Silva “Chief Artur” from PSP, Arquente – Cultural Association, Hotel AP Eva Sense,; João José Gago Horta (posthumously), João Amaro (Tertúlia Algarvia), Maria Cabral and Ricardo Colaço.

As part of the ceremony, the key of honor of the city of Faro to the Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority (CEMA), Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo.

After the ceremony, at 12:30, also with the presence of CEMA, the inauguration of the Memorial in honor of the fishermen of Faro who saved shipwrecked people during World War II.

In the afternoon, the unveiling of several new toponymic plaques will take place: Praça José Marciano Nobre, at 15:00 pm, Praça José Matos Junça, at 15:20 pm, Praça Joaquim Carvalho Afonso, at 15:40 pm and Praça Geleate Canau, at 16:00 pm.

From 17:10 pm, the inauguration of the new Social Emergency Accommodation Center (CAES) of Faro, a project coordinated by the Movement for Support to Social Problems (MAPS) with support from the Municipality. The inauguration of these new facilities, in Patacão, will be attended by Ana Mendes Godinho, Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Security.

Then, from 17:50 pm, the inauguration of the new community garden of Faro, in Patacão, a project of the Municipality that counts with the collaboration of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of the Algarve.

The Municipality Day celebrations end with the inauguration of two projects from the first edition of the Participatory Budget of Faro:
Futebol Lab, by Clube Desportivo de Montenegro, at 18:20 pm, and the rehabilitated multi-sports centers of São Pedro Futsal in Jardim da Alameda, from 19:20 pm.
