Cycling: Algarvian Daniela Campos finishes omnium in 12th place

Daniela Campos and Maria Martins are at the service of the national team

The Algarve Daniela Campos was, this Thursday, September 29, in 12th place in the omnium in the 3 Dias d'Aigle that take place on the track at the World Cycling Center in Switzerland.

Daniela Campos took to the track representing the national team in the omnium female.

In this event, the Portuguese runner faced some of the biggest names on the track worldwide, such as Clara Copponi (France), Lotte Kopecky (Belgium), Maike Van der Duin (Netherlands) and Chiara Consonni (Italy).

"The contest of omnium starts with the proof of scratch, where Daniela Campos always tried to be well placed, which guaranteed her 13th place», says the Portuguese Cycling Federation.

In the time race he managed to have an even better performance, finishing in 6th position. The problems would arrive in the elimination test, in which he would suffer a fall in the initial moments.

«This mishap would end up destroying any aspiration of a good result in this race. In the points race, Daniela Campos gave everything to score, managing to do so on two occasions, adding a total of three points», adds the Federation.

The national coach makes a very positive assessment of this performance by the Portuguese runner in the omnium competition.

“I am satisfied with the work she has done, both technically and tactically. The balance is very positive, because if it wasn't for that problem in the elimination we could have finished higher in the final classification. The objective was to add points, which guarantee us eligibility for important competitions such as the World Championships, and of course, the preparation for this year's world championships", said Gabriel Mendes.

Thus, the representative of the national team ended this omnium contest in 12th position, with a total of 53 points. The winner of the race was Frenchwoman Clara Copponi, who scored 183 points.

This Friday, September 30th, on the second of the three competitive rounds that make up the 3 Dias d'Aigle, there will be Maria Martins and Daniela Campos on the track. Daniela Campos will be the first to compete, in the elimination discipline, at 20:20, followed by Maria Martins, in the scratch, about an hour and a half later.
