Parish of Barão de São João wants to separate again from Bensafrim

A large part of the foreign community residing in the village of Barão de São João has now been registered

A group of people from the former parish of Barão de São João (Lagos) prepared a “complex document” to, under the new law of 2021, ask for the separation of this parish from that of Bensafrim, to which it was added by the “very contested” law of 2013.

This proposal for the breakdown of parishes was submitted to be approved at the Extraordinary Session of the Parish Assembly that will take place this evening, the 30th, at 21:00, at the Cultural Center of Barão de São João.

«This is the 1st big step, followed by the approval by the Municipal Assembly and finally by the Assembly of the Republic», emphasize the promoters.

In a statement, the group stresses that “after 80 years as autonomous parishes, Barão de São João and Bensafrim have been aggregated in a union of parishes for the last 9 years”.

«With such distinct historical and sociocultural identities and adding up to an immense territorial area, this forced union (imposed by a 2013 law that was very contested across the country) caused much damage to the populations, especially to Barão de São João», they add.

«With the entry into force of a new law in 2021 that allowed the correction of this situation, the population created a movement with the aim of restoring extinct parishes».

This was achieved with «the census of a large part of the foreign community residing in the village of Barão de São João, thus allowing to fulfill the requirement of having more than 750 registered voters».

This group of people from the local community “elaborated a complex document complying with the requirements of the law, which was signed by the 9 elements of the Parish Assembly. This proposal for the breakdown of parishes was finally submitted to be approved at the Extraordinary Session of the Parish Assembly», which will take place today.
