PSD wants amendment to the law that «favors carob theft»

«It is not understandable that the Government does not legislate on this situation», says the president of PSD Algarve

Cristóvão Norte, president of the PSD Algarve, wants an amendment to the law that «favors the theft of carob, understanding that «it is not understandable that the Government does not legislate on this situation».

The note sent to newsrooms appears after the Sul Informação have done a report on the subject, in which the Algarve farmers complain about the «tradition» that has become the carob theft.

According to Cristóvão Norte, «their absence of intervention is equivalent to allowing the situation to drag on». «It is infamous that whoever produces is being plundered and sees the State with its arms crossed», says the president of the PSD Algarve.

In a press release, the PSD stresses that “the Government has for a year in its possession a draft law proposed by a working group made up of AGRUPA, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve, the GNR, the Security Authority Food and Economics (ASAE), the Tax and Customs Authority and the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (AMAL) -, whose objective is to guarantee greater protection to thousands of carob producers. Strangely, the Government has not taken any decision and, therefore, its inaction is complicit in the wave of thefts that has been felt».

«The recommended solution is the mandatory registration with IFAP – Institute for Financing of Agriculture and Fisheries – by buyers, which for PSD Algarve is a step forward, as it will make it difficult for those who steal to be able to sell the product», they conclude.
