PSD wants free urban transport in Portimão for young and old

Proposal will be presented at the City Council today

The PSD will present today at the Portimão Municipal Assembly a proposal for free urban transport "Vai e Vem" for young people and for people over 65 years old.

The proposal “calls for the beginning of the economic study work, regulation and foresees the inclusion of all Portimonenses in the medium term”, according to the social democrats.

Acknowledging that «there are costs associated» with this measure, the PSD points out as an example «the municipality of Lisbon, which with a much larger number of users, will spend this year an amount of around 6 million euros and in the coming years a average of 15 million euros and reinforces that Portimão has 26 million euros at its disposal at the moment».

The mentioned value appears in the written information of the Mayor to today's Municipal Assembly, which reads that "andn March 4, 2022, the Municipality made the first amending change, for the purposes of incorporating the balance of budget execution for 2021, which amounted to 26 million euros».

For Carlos Gouveia Martins, the president of the PSD/Portimão, leader of the social-democratic bench to the Municipal Assembly and the 1st signer of the motion, this is a step “towards education for Mobility in Portimão”, which has “the necessary concern with the energy transition and with sustainability that we all stand for».

For the leader of the main opposition party, in this municipality, the Chamber "should start studying the possibility of extending the free proposal to unemployed people, people with disabilities and all young students (Secondary and Public Higher Education, Universidade do Algarve, and Private, ISMAT) displaced, even if they do not have tax residence in the Municipality of Portimão».

«We have presented several proposals, some accepted by other political parties, such as the Municipal Soft Mobility Pact, and other proposals that, in our view, were essential to improve the mobility system in the municipality. In fact, in this same session today we will also present two other recommendations for 'Vai e Vem' and we will not stop working in this area», assured Carlos Gouveia Martins.

For PSD/Portimão, «the policy must be governed by the principle of proposals that aim to improve the quality of life for all, proposals that present full evidence of cooperation with sustainable territorial policies and that look at the digital and ecological transition in a effective».
