Olhão invests more than 35 million in affordable homes for hundreds of families

Affordable housing and education are priorities for the Câmara de Olhão

Olhão will build more than 300 affordable housing units, 54 of which should be ready «in the first quarter of next year», and wants to continue its commitment to renovating the county's school park, he announced to the Sul Informação António Pina, mayor of Olhão, on the sidelines of the celebrations of the City of Olhão Day, which was marked on 16 June.

In addition to the official ceremonies, the day was marked by visits to various works in progress in the municipality, as well as to the place where close to three hundred affordable housing units will begin to be built in the coming years, whose rents will be adapted to income. of the families from Olhão who will live there.

“Our bets remain in line with what we did in the previous term. Education continues to be our biggest investment. We visited school nº4, where a requalification work is being carried out at a cost of around 1,6 million euros», revealed the mayor.

The intervention should be completed by May 2023 and “represents a slice of the more than 8 million euros that we are investing in the school park”.

In addition to education and the requalification of the school park, «the other big, big bet we have is affordable housing».

The construction of 54 houses on Rua António Henrique Cabrita is currently underway, «which have already been drawn and should be ready in the first quarter of next year».

«But we also visited another space, which is a great challenge: the old lithograph, on Avenida Sporting Clube Olhanense, where there is the possibility of building almost 300 housing units. There are 288 dwellings and 30 stores. Here, we are talking about an investment of 35 million euros», revealed the mayor of Olhão.

The principle of this project, which is expected to «be delivered no later than the end of the year» is that, «from an architectural point of view, the houses must have the same framework and quality as any other dwelling. For example, they have to have balconies, which is a requirement that we put in our specifications».

All «must have a parking space and, in the specific case of this project, we will have a second floor to provide the public parking area».

“We are talking about a housing bet for everyone. The objective is that, even in a family where both earn the minimum wage, the financial effort does not exceed 25% of their income», illustrated António Pina.

The idea is that these houses «are essentially for rent, although the allocation is also by lot, because we want to maintain transparency».

And if these affordable housing houses will still take a while to reach the hands of their future residents, another of the works visited will be inaugurated, at least in part, at the end of this week.

«We came to visit another urban rehabilitation, that of Avenida 16 de Junho, which is underway. We expect to open a parking area and a traffic lane on the 24th or 25th of June to the public, as it is summer and this grant is important. With the work, we even managed to create 60 or 70 more parking spaces than we had in the past», revealed António Pina.

The intervention represents an investment of 1,85 million euros and includes the creation of a parking lot for around 350 spaces, next to the riverside area of Olhão.

On City Day, it was also presented the new municipal portal, «which brings together the websites of the main municipal services and companies, making access more agile and more modern, while allowing citizens to deal with the most diverse matters online», according to the Olhão City Council.

Another novelty is the Incident Management Center, an online portal that allows citizens to «report, in an easy and intuitive way, any anomalous situation that occurs in the municipality, allowing maintenance services to act in good time».

In the field of tributes and recognition, Maria Laureta Pacheco was distinguished for 25 years of service to the municipality.

The Chamber also «re-attributed the school merit awards for the last academic year. João Tiago Santana (10th grade), Alice Navalho (11th grade), Lara Brito (12th grade) and Arianny Aguiar (professional courses) were awarded.
