Long weekend with a lot of heat and dust from North Africa

Tropical nights in the Center and South, especially in the Eastern Algarve

Temperature rise, with maximums of 40ºC and tropical nights, as well as the transport of dust from North Africa. This will be the weather between the 9th and 13th of June, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The IPMA explains that, on these days (June 13 is a public holiday in Lisbon), in mainland Portugal, “a situation of hot weather is expected, due to a mass of tropical air coming from North Africa/Iberian Peninsula, transported in the of an anticyclone located over the Azores region, on a crest towards Central Europe, and a valley of low pressure that extends from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula».

And it is this real meteorological imbroglio that leads to predict «a rise in temperature values, especially the maximum and on the 9th and 10th, reaching maximum temperatures between 30 and 35°C in the general territory, with higher values , of the order of 40°C, in Beira Baixa, Vale do Tejo and inland Alentejo».

In the western coastal strip, the values should be «slightly lower», varying between 25 and 30°C, due to the north-northwest wind, which can sometimes be strong during the afternoons.

On the 13th, Monday, the trend points to a small drop in temperature values, especially the maximum, between 2 and 5°C.

The IPMA adds that the values of maximum temperatures should be "between 5 and 12°C above the average values for the time of year, a situation that is
common at this time of year, and which in this context will lead to the issue of Hot Weather warnings, particularly indoors».

Minimum temperatures are expected to rise on the 10th, with tropical nights (that is, with minimums above 20ºC) expected in the interior, especially in the Center and South, and in the Eastern Algarve.

There may also be “unstable conditions in the interior regions from the afternoon of the 10th, with the possibility of localized showers and thunderstorms.

«Additionally, there may be transport of dust from North Africa», concludes the IPMA.

In short: a mini vacation full of heat, to enjoy on the beach. In the Algarve, due to the foreseen Levante, the temperature of the sea water must be inviting.
