Olhão Basic School wins 3rd place in the Continente School Mission Program

Escola Básica created the project “Hand in hand for healthy snacks!” with the aim of improving the quality of snacks

The José Carlos da Maia Basic School, in Olhão, came in 3rd place in the annual Challenge of the Continente School Mission Program, rheld in Lisbon, with a prize of 500 euros in recreational-pedagogical and sports material.

In the challenge, the 1st place was awarded to the Basic School of Pégada, in Guimarães and the 2nd place to the Basic School of Francelos, in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The schools’ challenge was to be «true solvers» of a problem identified in their proximity environment (class, school, wider community or even at home), based on one of the three main thematic pillars of the Continente School Mission – healthy eating, conscious and active lifestyle.

The 1st C class, from Escola Básica José Carlos da Maia, created the project “Hand in hand for healthy snacks!” with the objective of improving the quality of snacks, by promoting the inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the diet, and the reduction of sweets or gums.

Ambassadors Jéssica Silva, Filipa Gomes and Francisco Garcia attended the event that marked the end of the 2021/22 Continente School Mission.

The finalist schools presented the final projects to the members of the jury: Rita Barrocas, from Missão Continente, Helena Gil from the General Directorate of Education, Joana Baleia, from CEIDSS (Center for Studies and Research in Social Dynamics and Health), Rui Mascarenhas, from the Portuguese Football Association, Nathalie Ballan, from Sair da Casca, and André Mateus, from MOSSA.

The juries evaluated, in terms of content, children's involvement, originality, creativity, multidisciplinarity, presentation and public votes, the transfer of knowledge to parents, by prioritizing the involvement of students in the development of the works.

This 6th edition of the Escola Missão Continente programme, which had already covered the 1st CEB since 2016, was extended to Pre-School and 2nd CEB. From the 1st CEB, a total of 557 schools (57.232 students) registered, 28% more compared to last year, Pre-school was represented by 109 schools (4.365 students), and from the 2nd CEB 56 schools participated (9.107 students). ).

«Continente's Educational Program aims to impact students, teachers, parents and the entire school community, raising awareness of young people about healthy eating and lifestyles and education for conscious and sustainable consumption. Throughout the school year, it provides content, educational activities, challenges (with associated prizes), educational recreational materials and field visits», says Missão Continente.
