Initiative marks Blue School Day, on May 19, and includes schools from all over the country

The schools of Faro, Olhão and Lagos will also create an “Ocean Current”, on the 19th of May, at 11:30 am, to mark the Blue School Day. 

This is an initiative that mobilizes hundreds of schools and that «aims to raise awareness of the importance of the Ocean, through the creation of several human cords that bring together the school community, the local community, municipalities and entities linked to the sea».

According to Escola Azul, this is an educational program of the Ministry of Economy and Sea that launched to the 321 Blue Schools throughout the country the «challenge to join hands across the ocean and organize human cords by the sea or at a symbolic place of the community. ».

On the 19th of May, the symbolic moment will thus unite thousands of people and aims to "show how the younger generations are united and mobilized for the need to protect the Ocean", a message that takes place in a year in which the Ocean Conference is being held. of the United Nations at the end of June in Lisbon.

In addition to the message across the ocean, the moment will also serve for many schools to leave an appeal for peace, taking into account the scenario of war that is currently living in Ukraine.

"Many of these human cords are being prepared with the support of municipalities and will involve much more than school communities, with more than 1000 people expected to participate in a single chain in some cases", says Escola Azul in a statement. .

Em Faro, the Blue Schools of the municipality, Estação Náutica de Faro, Marinha, Parish Council of Montenegro in a total of 1602 students.

In Olhão, the meeting takes place at Jardim dos Pescadores, where close to 1000 participants are expected.

Finally, in Lagos, the human cord (with around 600 participants) will be held on Avenida dos Descobrimentos and will be attended by students from Blue Schools from Pre-School to 2nd Cycle, and the entire school community.

Escola Azul is an educational program of the Ministry of Economy and Sea that involves schools that work on themes related to the sea in an Ocean Literacy community that brings together teachers, students, municipalities and partner entities.
