Hundreds of boxers compete in boxing in Portimão

Competition has young promises, but also elite athletes

260 boxers from eight countries will compete in the Portimão Box Cup from tomorrow, May 13th, until Sunday, the 15th, at the Portimão Gimnodesportivo Pavilion.

The competition, promoted by the Portimão Boxing School (EBP), brings together 260 boxers of both sexes, aged between 13 and 40 and divided into five levels, representing 44 clubs and eight countries, «which makes this tournament one of the biggest in the Olympic boxing modality ever held in Portugal», according to the Portimão Chamber.

Played since 2019, the competition was designed by the president of the EBP, Carlos André Reis, «as a way to provide an opportunity for its athletes to compete in a high degree of demand within the country».

“At the base of the project is the maximization of the athletes’ abilities through new competitive challenges, giving them the possibility to face multiple opponents in different styles and strategies, which allows them to progress and mature as boxers”, describes the municipality.

This competition brings together from young promises - the 'schoolboys', aged 13 and 14 - to the most accredited boxers, the so-called elites, who during the three days will compete simultaneously in two rings.

As an Olympic tournament, which does not award titles but only individual trophies, the team plays a central role in this sporting event, in which 17 EBP boxers will participate.

Among athletes, referees, coaches, managers, technical staff and the rest of the staff, about 500 people will be involved in the Sports Pavilion of Portimão, with 17 national clubs and 27 foreign clubs, most of which European.

Entrance to the Portimão Box Cup is free, and the tournament program can be consulted on the test website.

The 2nd Portimão Box Cup has the institutional support of the Municipality of Portimão, the Portimão Parish, the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth and the Algarve Boxing Association.
