Opening of the Islamic Baths of Loulé already has a date set

The Islamic Baths (or hamman) will now have an innovative component: a 3D survey

The Islamic Baths of Loulé, the most complete building of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula, will open to the public on Saturday, May 28, at 14:00 pm, after museum works that cost around 1,3 million euros.

This is one of the highlights of the Loulé Municipality Week, which will take place from the 21st to the 29th of May.

The Islamic Baths of Loulé are a public complex from the end of the period of Islamic occupation of the Algarve (they probably operated between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries), having been occupied in the XNUMXth century as housing.

The works that took place sought to enhance both the Baths and the archaeological remains of the late XNUMXth century noble house and the medieval and modern wall, even making the existing turret visible on the Bicas Velhas side.

The Islamic Baths (or hamman) will now have an innovative component: a 3D survey, made with the help of the Mértola Archaeological Field, will give the visitor the opportunity to get to know the complex as it was.

One of the highlights of these Loulé Week celebrations is also the inauguration of the Advanced Civil Protection Unit in Vale Maria Dias, on the 24th of May, at 14:00.

The expansion of the former Casa dos Cantoneiros in Serra do Caldeirão, in the parish of Salir, made it possible to install the base for a Civil Protection detachment in the interior.

Command Post, logistical support for Civil Protection operations, headquarters for forest sappers, space for training in the field of forest fire protection and temporary shelter for the population are some of the building's valences.

The Thursday of Ascension or Thursday of the Espiga, 26th of May, marks the Municipality Day and with it the official moments that take place in the morning, in Praça da República, such as the hoisting of the Flag, graduation of the Municipal Firefighters and Banda Philharmonic Artists of Minerva and homage to the soldiers who died in the War of the ex-colonies.

In a solemn public ceremony that takes place this year outdoors, at Cerca do Convento, from 9:45 am, it is time for the speech by the mayor of Loulé Vítor Aleixo, and for the launch of the video “É bom Viver em Loulé”. It is in the same place that, at 11:15 am, José Eduardo Agualusa will receive the Grand Prize for Chronicles and Dispersos Literaries APE/ CM de Loulé, which this year distinguishes the work “O Mais Belo Fim do Mundo”, by this Angolan writer.

In the afternoon, rural tradition returns to Salir, with the Festa da Espiga, which will feature the ethnographic parade where the parish's agricultural activities will once again be represented, many of which are practically extinct but which in the past were the basis local economic.

This party runs until Saturday, May 28, and will feature handicraft, gastronomy and lots of music, with a poster that includes names like Quim Barreiros, MGDRV or HMB.

On Friday, May 27, the Municipality will once again honor its employees with 25 and 35 years of service. The session will take place at 18:30 pm in the
Castle Alcaidaria.

On Saturday, the initiative “Bora Lá ao Parque” takes place, carried out by the local working groups of the Loulé Cidade Educadora municipal network, which takes to the Loulé Municipal Park a set of initiatives that aim to promote social interaction between the population, from the youngest to the oldest.

«In partnership with associations, municipal companies, schools, institutions, but above all with the involvement of our citizens, we will have seven days entirely dedicated to the municipality of Loulé and to the people of Loulé, with initiatives that aim to enhance our identity, culture and local history» , says Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé.

Municipality Week ends on Sunday, May 29, with “Bora Lá à Piscina”, an initiative that promises many surprises and activities in the pools of Loulé and Quarteira.
