The Vila Real de Santo António City Council renegotiated the contract for the provision of services with the company Ecoambiente, which will allow for the strengthening of hygiene and urban cleaning services in the municipality.
«The contract, which was subject to several amendments, now provides for an increase in the levels of coverage, efficiency and human resources, ensuring correct cleaning and public hygiene of all parishes», says the VRSA Chamber.
According to the municipality, the «negotiation process with Ecoambiente results from a vast set of meetings held with the company and with all political forces with municipal representation and aims to bring the municipality gains in the effectiveness and efficiency of the services provided, correcting situations that have motivated population complaints.
«We inherited an MSW collection service whose specifications were not being fulfilled, to which was added an accumulated debt of more than 700 thousand euros and a threat of imminent termination of service. Given the seriousness of the situation, we took immediate measures to solve the problem, since the municipality did not have the human and material resources to assume, in the short term, the service of cleaning and collection of MSW», says Álvaro Araújo, mayor. «From now on, we have a contract that increases the levels of demand, coverage and scope of the service and that simultaneously maintains the sustainability and continuity of Ecoambiente's operation», the mayor continues.
According to the Mayor of VRSA, "it is the intention of the executive to reintegrate the MSW services in the sphere of the municipality", and the necessary financial conditions are being met to start the procedures for the acquisition of material, processes that will take, on average, , 24 to 36 months, taking into account the complexity of the operation.
