First Animal Provider takes office in Tavira

To ensure animal rights

Agnes Freitas, the first Animal Provider in Tavira, will take office on the 7th of April, at 17:00 pm, at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library.

The Municipal Assembly of Tavira, through the proposal of the City Council, approved the designation of an external figure, as a voluntary and unpaid collaboration, to take up the cause of animal protection.

«The animal ombudsman emerged due to the legislative evolution of animal welfare in Portugal. It is performed by an independent and impartial citizen in relation to any municipal entity. This has as its main objective the active communication between the municipality, the citizens, the local associations of animal defense and the institutions with responsibility in this area», explains the Municipality of Tavira.

Agnes Freitas, in order to guarantee the rights of animals, has several powers, among them «receive, analyze and seek to resolve complaints and claims presented by citizens, assess complaints, without decision-making power, directing only the necessary recommendations».

It also has to make, every year, a report of its activity, sending it to the Chamber with knowledge to the Municipal Assembly.

For more information, you can contact the Animal Ombudsman, available by appointment at the Level Up Building, next to Paços do Concelho, by telephone: 281 320 554 or by e-mail to [email protected]
