Lagos hosts international speed skating tournament again

This is the biggest event of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula

More than half a thousand skaters, representing around a hundred clubs from 16 countries, will participate in the «biggest international speed skating tournament in the Iberian Peninsula», which is also the second stage of the 2022 European Cup, starts on Friday. Friday, the 8th, and ends on Sunday, the 10th, in Lagos.

The first phase of the competition, promoted by the Roller Lagos Clube de Patinagem and supported by the municipality, takes place on the 8th and 9th of April on the track of Escola Secundária Júlio Dantas, «with speeds of around 50 kilometers per hour», according to the Lagos City Council. .

On the morning of the 10th (Sunday) the race moves to Avenida dos Descobrimentos, where the 100 meters race will take place, the «fastest in the speed skating modality» and the marathon, the longest, «with six laps city ​​of Lagos».

The Terras do Infante tournament will count with the participation of «several champions and former world and European champions who are coming to make their debut this season in Lagos».

The main candidates for victory and most consecrated figures are, in the case of long-distance events, Martin Ferrié (France), two-time marathon world champion and 15Km to eliminate, Nolan Bediaf (France), world champion of 10Km points, Peter Michael (New Zealand), multiple world champion and specialist in knockout competitions, Patxi Peula (Spain), European and world champion, and Diogo Marreiros, four-time European champion in 2021, accompanied by his teammates, Miguel Bravo and Martyn Dias.

In the men's short events, Jhoan Guzman (Spain) stands out, considered the "Usain Bolt" of skating, being the fastest in the world at 100m, «who will try, on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, to lower than 10 seconds», and Simon Albrecht (Germany), European champion and one of the strongest skaters in the international peloton.

On the female side, emphasis is given to the strong “French armada” formed by Manon Fraboulet, Marine Balanant and Marine Lefeuvre, but also to the participants from the Netherlands, Spain and Germany and the winner of other editions of the Terras do Infante Tournament, the Colombian Aura Quintana.

“In the short events, we will have the presence of the European multi-champion Mathilde Pedronno (France), the European and world champion Laethisia Schimek (Germany), the 2019 world junior champion Nerea Langa and the medal winner Luiza Gonzalez (Spain)”, adds the organization.

In addition to the home athletes, Portugal will also be represented by the junior world runner-up Marco Lira (CRD Prazeres da Madeira) and the junior European vice-champions Miguel Monteiro and Jéssica Rodrigues (Madeira).

«The event on the 10th of April will require the closure of traffic on the two lanes of Avenida dos Descobrimentos, between 8:00 am and 10:30 am, between the Lagos Volunteer Firefighters and the Ribeirinha Front Car Park, and between 10:30 am and 14:00 am.
