The Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, headquarter of Giões, parish in the municipality of Alcoutim, reopened last Sunday, April 3, after restoration work on the altars and painting of the Main Chapel's roof.

The reopening event began with the Thanksgiving Mass, presided over by the Bishop of the Algarve, followed by the Solemn Session, with the intervention of the entities involved in the process and funding: Deacon Albino Martins, for the Parish of Giões, José Afonso, for the Parish Council of Giões, Rosa Palma, councilor of the Alcoutim City Council, Jorge Botelho, deputy, José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve, and D. Manuel Neto Quintas, Bishop of the Diocese of the Algarve.

The works began after, in 2017, the Parish of Giões submitted an application for sub-program 2, within the scope of the Collective Use Equipment Program, with the aim of rehabilitating the heritage, respecting and defending the memory of the roots.

The application then approved allowed, on 10 February 2019, to open the first phase, which focused on repairing the roof and stabilizing structural problems. In August 2019, thanks to the support of Associação Grito da Alegria, it was also possible to recover two side altars dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima and São Pedro.

According to the Alcoutim City Council, this whole process led to the presentation of a new application and new approval in the same sub-program, which allowed the recovery of the remainder: repair and painting alluding to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, patron saint of Giões, existing on the cover of the Capela Mor from the XNUMXth century; Main Altar and the two side Altars (Christ Crucified and Our Lady of the Snows).

The works cost around 156 thousand euros and were supported by the Portuguese State, the Municipality of Alcoutim, the Parish Council of Giões, the Grito da Alegria Association, the Diocese of the Algarve and other entities and individuals.
