“Fly and Believe”: “PorTiArtista” project opens multimedia studio in Bairro da Cruz da Midteira

The PorTiArtista project emerged from the need to bet on the skills and potential of children and young people from socially disadvantaged strata.

The “PorTiArtista” project, which aims to stimulate the musical talents of children and young people from Bairro da Cruz da Mideira (Portimão), already has a multimedia studio, inaugurated this Monday, March 21st. The first video clip is also available.

To mark the moment, the children and young people of this social neighborhood created a new lyrics about a musical arrangement based on the popular theme “Volare”, by the Gipsy Kings, which they called “Flying and believing”.

The PorTiArtista project emerged from the need to invest in the skills and potential of children and young people from socially disadvantaged strata, where the opportunity to access the arts is non-existent, resulting from a partnership between the Portimão Chamber and the Dança Mais Association, which launched a candidacy for the government program Bairros Saudáveis with a view to creating a multimedia studio in an existing physical space in Bairro Cruz da Midteira.

The main objective is to guide children and young people to a space where their creativity can be explored and monitored, encouraging writing, content construction and the development of musical productions and choreography, among other aspects.

One of the first activities of this project was the recording in January of a video, created by the children and young people of Cruz da Midteira and released on the social networks of the Municipality of Portimão, supporting and encouraging Edmundo Inácio and João Leote, the two Algarve finalists in the RTP contest “The Voice Portugal”, who will also sponsor the project, even offering to hold some workshops.

The vice-president of the Municipality of Portimão, Álvaro Bil and Fábio Duarte, from Dança Mais, were present at the inauguration, as well as the Algarve musicians and patrons of PorTiArtista Miguel José (linked to the musical projects Tualle, ALLCANTE and Between jacks and cables) and José do Carmo (music teacher at the EB da Pedra Mourinha and member of the bands Cranky Geeks and Zebra Sépia).

According to Álvaro Bila, «with PorTiArtista, we are helping these children to enjoy Portimão, create for the city and contribute to a better future».

As for Fábio Duarte, «we have already worked with some of the children and young people of this neighborhood in schools, which also makes this project more attractive, as it allows us to meet them outside the school environment, in a more familiar context. After this first phase of setting up the studio, notions about how to include dance in a video clip will follow, adding it to their music».

PorTiArtista is promoted through the technical team of the municipal project (Re)Viver o Meu Bairro, which daily monitors the population living in the Cruz da Midteira neighborhood and is composed of a manager, a mediator and an arts technician, born and raised in the neighborhood of Cruz da Midteira and which reflects a childhood dream in young people, in the form of an open door to a space where artistic creativity has no limits.

Built in 1998, as part of a municipal resettlement programme, several cultures coexist in Bairro da Cruz da Mideira, namely African, with a special predominance of Cape Verdeans, as well as the Gypsy, currently living there about 430 individuals, spread over 120 dwellings, with supported lease regime.
