DGS: Vaccination against Poliomyelitis and Measles is a priority among refugees from Ukraine

Measles and polio vaccine coverage is a priority

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) published this Saturday a rule that defines the vaccination strategies of foreign citizens who are in Portugal in a situation of reception. The standard defines as a priority the vaccination coverage against measles and poliomyelitis.

The DGS explains, in a statement, that “according to the norm, vaccination schedules of origin of citizens must be adapted according to those recommended in Portugal”.

However, “considering that there is a greater risk of certain vaccine-preventable diseases in countries with low vaccination coverage and in the face of disruptive situations, such as armed conflict, priorities were defined for vaccination against measles and poliomyelitis”.

Additionally, “recommendations regarding vaccination against tuberculosis were issued, according to the National Vaccination Program (PNV), the Vaccination Campaign against COVID-19 and the Vaccination Campaign against seasonal flu”.

The DGS adds that these recommendations comply with the provisions of the National Vaccination Program (Portaria 248/2017; Norm 18/2020), which determines that all people present in Portugal have the right to be vaccinated in accordance with the provisions of the PNV 2020 ( Standard 18/2020).

Vaccination will be carried out after the «assessment of the vaccination status, according to age and possible risk pathologies or special circumstances», and «all vaccines considered necessary, whenever possible» must be administered.

The DGS ends by informing that “adherence to these measures will be promoted among these citizens through targeted community and individual communication strategies”.
