The Municipality of Castro Marim is installing telemetry equipment to control water consumption in municipal green spaces and creating ZMC's (Measurement and Control Zones) in the water supply systems for human consumption, announced this Wednesday, February 16, the municipality. The measure aims to “protect and improve the management of water resources in the municipality”.

This investment results from an application to the Environmental Fund, «carried out in close collaboration with the Portuguese Environment Agency, within the scope of water efficiency, namely in the improvement of infrastructure and irrigation management technologies in urban green spaces and in the modernization and active control of losses», explains the Chamber of Castro Marim.

As part of this initiative, 125 irrigation controllers and five antennas/outdoor stations for communication are being installed in the approximately 70 municipal green spaces in the parishes of Altura and Castro Marim.

«This modernization of water supply services and active control of water losses in irrigation represents a total investment of around 250 thousand euros, guaranteeing greater efficiency of services, identification of water losses in the network, monthly and real readings and better and more effective fraud control in accounting systems», highlights the municipality.

36 control and measurement equipment for the municipal supply network are also being installed, “which will thus be associated with the process of reading and billing by telemetry system already underway since 2019”.

This technology allows «real-time control of water consumption and detection of ruptures, enabling the optimization and reduction of consumption».

«We are working towards having a municipality that is increasingly sustainable, resilient and adapted to the consequences of climate change that we have been witnessing, especially in the Algarve region, such as the increase in the average annual temperature, the long periods of drought and drought. or the rise in the average sea level", declared the vice-president of the Chamber Filomena Sintra.

The mayor also stresses that this strategy also includes an investment plan in electric vehicles, which makes available for its internal services and for longer journeys, the installation of Normal Charging Stations (PCN), the installation of bicycle parking at various points of the municipality and the development of the “Cycling Triangle” project, which will link Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim or Praia Verde via cycle paths.
